Description:
Very well-known small sized sparrow. Breeding male has grey crown with chestnut sides and nape, and black throat and upper breast; duller in non-breeding plumage. Female has pale buff supercilium, dark brown streaking on buffish mantle, and unstreaked greyish-white underparts.
Distribution:
Common summer visitor to the lower valleys and towns all over Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found around settlements, including towns and villages up to 3000m; post breeding usually at lower elevations in cultivations and open scrub.
Behavior:
Seeds collected from growing plants and from the ground. Catches arthropods by searching for them, although occasionally takes larger insects, such as butterflies, in flight. Feeds mainly on vegetable matter, especially seeds of grasses, cultivated cereals and low herbs, but also buds, berries and wide range of household scraps.
